JAZZ WEEKEND BRIDGES GENERATIONAL GAPS
Who would have guessed that lyrics such as "ba-doo-bop-do-do" could
bring together people from the "Greatest Generation" of
the 1920s all
the way to Generation Y'ers -- and beyond? Given what happened during
Lawrence's Jazz Celebration Weekend Nov. 6 and 7, apparently a few
finger-snapping beats are really all it takes to bridge just about
any generational gap.

Steve March Tormé, one of Mel’s sons, has followed
in his father’s footsteps, becoming a singer and songwriter of
no mean ability. He began to record solo, wrote his own songs and
his first solo album includes a duet with his father on Nat King
Cole’s ‘Straighten up and fly right’, which you can also hear on
Steve’s newest album called “So far”.

STEVE MARCH TORMÉ REVIEW
"Steve March Tormé's recent,
sold-out performance at The Naples Philharmonic Center for
the Arts was, quite simply, an extraordinary musical event.
Steve March Tormé is the son of the late, legedary and multi-talented
Mel Tormé, and in this multi-media program, entitled "Tormé Sings Tormé, Steve March pays vocal and verbal tribute to his father.
Filling dad's shoes--especially when dad was an absolute genius
as a composer, singer, drummer, pianist and author--is virtually
impossible. Mel Tormé just cannot be imitated. Wisely, Steve
March Tormé doesn't even try, though if anyone could do it, he could.
There are, in fact, a few moments where the vocal resemblance is
erie."

singing and showmanship."

A TALENTED SON HONORS SINGING LEGEND MEL TORMÉ
Steve March Tormé pays tribute to his late father. As a singer, pianist, drummer,
composer and arranger, Mel Tormé is a tough act to follow. But that’s not stopping
his talented son, Steve March Tormé, who is now presenting "Tormé Sings
Tormé," a classy tribute
to the life and music of his late father.

Ask Lorna Luft. Ask Julian Lennon. Ask Frank Sinatra
Jr. Sometimes, regardless of talent, it's an uphill battle for
the offspring of famous performers to establish careers of their
own. But one who's beaten the odds is Steve March Tormé, son of
the legendary "Velvet Fog," Mel Tormé.

STEVE MARCH TORMÉ THE VIC SANTA MONICA
"Steve March Tormé is more than a jazz singer-he's
a consummate entertainer. Indeed, with the rising popularity of
artists such as Michael Bublé and Josh Groban, Tormé's future is
promising. Much like his father, he holds a crowd and excites emotions
with jazz scats and profound lyrics. An exceptionally versatile
artist, Tormé could become the Sinatra of his generation, and in
doing so, could carry jazz into the mainstream commercial market."

"We idled for 20 minutes at a crack, with
the A/C blasting, seat fans at max blow, seat massagers silently
unkinkiing thigh muscles and Steve March Tormé--Velvet Fog fils--
singing "Straighten Up and Fly Right' out of 11 speakers surrounded
by "Merino" leather, which perhaps comes from Miami dolphins." .
. . "I might've gone quicker but, just before the tree went
green, Tormé coincidentally lit into "More Than Gone",
a song that describes both my mind and the X6 M, and I was understandably
distracted." |

It can be difficult being a singer when you are the son of a famous
vocalist, but Steve March Torme has been able to develop his own
career and musical personality independent of his father. It helps
that he was not named Mel Torme, Jr. and that he has not sought
to duplicate his father's hits. Instead he has found his own direction.

This album is a compilation of the first three
CDs of Steve March Tormé. The bands (filled with all stars) are
swinging and driving as

the tree. His voice texture bears some resemblance to Mel's but
is definitely his own.

"His out of tempo verse to "Let's Fall" is
worth all the stars some other magazine's rating system might allow,
and his "Stardust" is all but definitive, furnishing
the program with a dazzling denouement. Steve Rawlins' arrangements

to be missed by anyone nourished by either . . . or both."
